Today, state Senator Cecil Thomas (D-Avondale) and state Representative Jessica E. Miranda (D-Forest Park) praised the City of Cincinnati for declaring gun violence a public health crisis during a press conference last Tuesday.
“There is no question that Ohio is facing a public health crisis due to gun violence,” said Sen. Thomas. “Gun violence leaves too many people with physical and emotional scars. Our children are helpless victims. Our hope for a better future and a willingness to stand up on behalf of survivors and victims prompted Rep. Miranda and me to create the Gun Violence Prevention Caucus. I urge all Ohioans to join us and advocate for gun safety laws. The cost of inaction is too great.”“During National Gun Violence Survivor’s Week, this declaration is a necessary first step to establishing gun safety in our communities. That is why Sen. Thomas and I co-founded the Gun Violence Prevention Caucus,” said Rep. Miranda. “Our caucus will continue to advocate for the many commonsense policies that could be put into place to save lives.” According to Everytown For Gun Safety, Ohio has the 20th-highest rate of gun violence in the U.S., with 1,529 gun deaths each year.
