First Amendment Rights of Teachers

1

Dr. Denise Shockley and Dr. Ronald Morris were honored to have their article, “Professional Responsibility, Opinion, and High School Government Teachers Practicing the First

Amendment in Their Community,” selected for publication in The Delta Kappa Gamma Bulletin: International Journal for Professional Educators. The article describes their

research with high school government teachers concerning their classroom practices when discussing controversial topics. While public school teachers have a right to free speech

and personal opinions, they also have a responsibility to educate students to think critically and discuss issues respectfully. Students, parents, and social media bring controversial

issues to the schools, and teachers must be prepared to face them with both fairness and professionalism.  Check out their article here.
