Today, U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) applauded the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announcement that $32.6 million in fiscal year (FY) 2021 competitive grant funds have been awarded to five Ohio transit agencies. These grant awards will help modernize bus fleets and facilities across the state, which will support good-paying jobs and make needed capital improvements.

“The more than $32 million in federal grant funding is great news for regional transit authorities across Ohio,” said Portman. “Funding for these projects will help these transportation authorities purchase new buses and keep up with maintenance and repairs to better serve their communities.”

The following Transit Authorities received funding:

  • Laketran: $14,681,981
  • Portage Area Regional Transportation Authority: $1,514,888
  • Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority: $2,307,200
  • Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority: $10,134,960
  • Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority: $4,000,000
Earlier this week, Portman applauded FTA’s announcement that their FY2022 Low or No Emission (Low-No) and Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Programs are open to applicants. Funding for these programs was significantly increased due to the passage of the bipartisan infrastructure law, of which Senator Portman was lead Republican negotiator.

Note: Last fall, Senator Portman sent letters to FTA Administrator Fernandez asking the FTA to consider the grant applications submitted by the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority, the Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority, and the Portage Area Regional Transportation Authority.
