With the Russian invasion of Ukraine entering its fourth week, Congressman Bob Gibbs (OH-7) and Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-9) led 12 colleagues to introduce a bipartisan resolution expressing unwavering support for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. The resolution demands Putin’s ceasefire and withdrawal of all Russian troops from Ukraine. Gibbs and Kaptur condemned the targeting and brutal killing of civilians by Russian forces, including the bombing of a maternity and children’s hospital.
The resolution, titled Supporting the Ukrainian people and recognizing their contributions to the State of Ohio, also “urges the Biden administration to hold Putin accountable for the unconscionable atrocities committed in Ukraine.”
Citing the large population of Ohioans of Ukrainian descent, the resolution concluded by recognizing and honoring the “cultural contributions of Ukrainian Americans” to the state.
Congressman Gibbs issued the following statement:
“Putin’s invasion is an unjustified act of horrifying violence against the nation and people of Ukraine. The spirit and determination of the Ukrainian people in defending their homeland has inspired the world. The United States must lead our friends and allies in providing material support for Ukraine so they can continue the fight. Putin must be held to account for his vicious attacks on civilians and we urge the Biden administration to levy the most punishing sanctions in response to his barbaric tactics. Additionally, we recognize that the Ukrainian diaspora has provided an invaluable contribution to America and the Buckeye State. There is widespread bipartisan support for Ukraine in Congress and across the nation, and Congresswoman Kaptur and I wanted to express and reinforce this support with this similarly bipartisan resolution.”
Congresswoman Kaptur also released a statement:
“Ohio is home to a vibrant Ukrainian community – Liberty loving constituents who enrich the fabric of our society. It is at times like this, with Vladimir Putin’s murderous rampage across Ukraine, that we remember how closely tied the United States and her history is to the rest of the world. Ukraine’s story is our story not only because of its enduring quest for freedom and self-determination but also because of the tremendous contributions to our nation and the State of Ohio that Ukrainians and Ukrainian-Americans have made. Together, let us honor the many Ukrainian communities that for decades have endowed Ohio with a fuller culture and society.”
