Today, state Senator Teresa Fedor (D-Toledo) issued a statement in response to the leaked U.S. Supreme Court opinion, indicating that the Court would overturn Roe v. Wade, remove the federal constitutional right to abortion and give the power to restrict or ban abortion to each state. The Court’s decision will not be considered final until it is published in the coming months.
“This opinion sets back abortion rights and access by decades. Our rights to bodily autonomy and basic reproductive health care are under vehement attack. We must be clear – limiting or eliminating abortion access puts millions of lives at risk, particularly the lives of Black, low-income and working-class Ohioans. Forcing birth upon someone who does not want to have a child is dangerous and inhumane, especially for those who are already suffering trauma, such as survivors of sexual violence and human trafficking. Despite this unconscionable draft opinion, abortion remains legal in Ohio. I will continue fighting to keep it that way.”
