Today, state Senator Hearcel F. Craig (D-Columbus) issued the following statement to praise the Ohio Senate’s passage of Senate Bill 323, which designates a portion of State Route 315, extending from King Avenue to Broad Street in Columbus, as the “Jesse Owens Memorial Highway.”
“Jesse Owens is recognized as one the greatest and most famous athlete in track and field history,” Craig said. “Although Owens was recognized globally, he endured hardships and faced racial discrimination at home. The highway will be a testament to a man who served his city, sate, and country – both on and off the track field – in the face of discrimination and hardship.”
The legislation, which Craig originally introduced as Senate Bill 298, was amended into S. B. 323 this week. The bill now heads to House for committee referral.
