The Marietta College Art Department is pleased to present “Planting Gifts,” a collaboration with Marietta College students, Gallery 310, and Passiflora Studio. The project is a mixed media greenhouse installation with wire sculptures produced by Drawing and Flat & Solid design students as well as painted rocks with an inspirational quote from the Express Yourself Pio 101 class. In addition to the greenhouse and art pieces, there is a suspended natural “flower cloud” created by the Passiflora Studio of Marietta. The project will be on view in the Atrium Gallery, located on the third floor of the Hermann Fine Arts Center, from Friday, October 14th through Monday, November 14th. It is available for viewing from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
On their journey of looking and making, fall 2022 Drawing and Flat & Solid Design classes have been creating carefully observed contour-line drawings of plant life found on campus. To collaborate and foster a greater sense of community within the department (and beyond), students transformed these investigations into lively contour sculptures that will live together in a greenhouse that will grow and evolve as students contribute their observations to a larger collection of gestures and visions. The project title comes from a passage from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s, Gifts: Flowers and fruits are always fitting presents; flowers because they are a proud assertion that a ray of beauty outvalues all the utilities of the world.
