Amazon received $172 million in subsidies, tax breaks, and grants from Ohio communities for 14 projects.
Advocacy group Good Jobs First, which opposes such subsidies, found Ohio provided the seventh-highest amount of grants and breaks among U.S. states to the nearly $1-trillion company.
Ohio is ranked behind Texas (13 projects/$306 million) and ahead of Tennessee (20 projects/$166 million), Kentucky (21 projects/$112 million), and Missouri (2 projects/$111 million).
The most expensive subsidy provided in Ohio was by the Dublin government, which offered $94 million to Amazon in a local and state package that includes a $77 million exemption on sales tax for a data center and $4 million in income tax credits.
The second largest subsidy was worth $24 million in Akron through tax increment financing and tax credits.
There were four developments which received undisclosed subsidy amounts.
Ohio does not collect income tax, while also providing a substantial amount of subsidies through a private economic development corporation that's lacking in transparency.
State-run audits of provided subsidies have fallen behind schedule and offered little recommendations to improve Ohio's tax-break programs.
As of Nov. 17, 2022, Amazon had received 310 separate tax break deals from local and state governments across the U.S., totaling $5.14 billion. The state of Virginia was home to the largest portion of these taxpayer-subsidized Amazon projects.
