BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University stunned the No. 6 nationally ranked John Carroll University by a final score of 99-94 in front of a packed Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
BW Leaders (11-12, 7-9 OAC)
- Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Anthony Mazzeo (Canton/Massillon Jackson) scored a season high 39 points as he moved two spots on the All-time scoring leader into 19th place with 1,299 points.
- Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC Jake Snyder (Stow/Archbishop Hoban) added 19 points, six rebounds and four assists.
- Sophomore guard Luke Chicone led the way with 19 points and six rebounds.
- Senior guard Jerry Higgins III added 15 points off the bench.
- Sophomore forward Zoltan Nagy (Lakewood/St. Edward) started off the half with a layup off a Snyder feed.
- The Yellow Jackets came out red hot from three as they made six of their first three pointers.
- A steal by senior forward Jackson Simmons (Wadsworth) and a layup by freshman guard Ray Ellington (Westlake) forced a John Carroll timeout with BW leading 26-15.
- A three from Higgins III cut the Yellow Jackets lead to 36-30.
- The Yellow Jackets responded with an 8-0 run to regain a 14 point advantage.
- A sophomore guard Chase Toppin layup at the buzzer cut the BW lead to 50-38 at the break.
- Mazzeo led all scorers with 17 points on 7-9 shooting.
- Snyder added 11 points, five rebounds and three assists.
- BW shoot over 50% from three point range, going 8-15.
- Chicone led John Carroll with eight points.
- Toppin added seven points.
- The Yellow Jackets opened the half on a 7-0 run.
- The Blue Streaks battled throughout the half and ate into the BW lead.
- With 55 seconds left in the half, John Carroll was able to trim the lead down to just two.
- The Yellow Jackets defense regrouped and made key stop after key stop over the final minute of action.
- BW went 5/6 from the free line to regain a 99-94 lead as the final buzzer sounded.
- Mazzeo once again was the high scorer dropping 22 points in the second half.
- Simmons was the other Yellow Jacket in double figures as he scored 11 to go with four rebounds.
- Higgins III was the high man for the Blue Streaks with 12 points.
- Chicone added 11 points.
