WASHINGTON, D.C. – On May 6, 2023, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced that AmeriCorps has awarded $2,520,982 in State and National grants to two organizations in Cleveland to support 110 AmeriCorps members. In addition to the awards announced today, AmeriCorps members supported by these awards are eligible for up to $758,450 in Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards to help pay for college, vocational training, or to pay back student loans.

“AmeriCorps is about empowering citizens to strengthen their local communities,” said Brown. “These investments will allow organizations in Cleveland Ohio to take on volunteers who will help students access important resources and further expand their efforts to improve the education of Cleveland students.”

Organizations receiving funds include:

  • $1,495,000 to City Year in Cleveland to provide full-day education services to students in seven Cleveland public schools. AmeriCorps members will be responsible for mentoring 680 second through tenth grade students to improve skills like literacy, math, and attendance.
  • $1,025,982 to College Now Greater Cleveland to deliver programs and counseling on college and career exploration, financial education and planning, and facilitate successful postsecondary transitions for students into careers or higher education.
AmeriCorps provides opportunities for Americans to serve their country domestically, address the nation’s most pressing challenges, improve lives and communities, and strengthen civic engagement. Each year, the agency places more than 200,000 AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers in intensive service roles; and empowers millions more to serve as long-term, short-term, or one-time volunteers.
