On August 8, 2024, Dean Rieck reported that the Buckeye Firearms Association (BFA) has formally requested Ohio Governor Mike DeWine to consider a pro-Second Amendment candidate for the potential replacement of U.S. Senator J.D. Vance. This request follows the recent announcement by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump naming Vance as his vice-presidential running mate.
Should Trump and Vance secure victory in the upcoming November General Election, Vance's Senate seat will be vacated, necessitating an appointment by Governor DeWine for the remainder of his six-year term.
The BFA's letter to Governor DeWine emphasized the importance of selecting a candidate who upholds Second Amendment rights. The letter, dated July 29, 2024, states:
"The nomination of U.S. Senator J.D. Vance as Vice President on the Republican ticket is an exciting and honorable development for the State of Ohio. In the event that he is elected, you will have the opportunity to fill his vacant seat in the U.S. Senate."
The association highlighted DeWine's record on pro-gun legislation in Ohio and underscored their concern over federal-level challenges faced by gun owners and businesses:
"Here in Ohio, you have signed more pro-gun legislation than any governor in Ohio history... From a national perspective, the situation is much less favorable."
The BFA stressed the need for strong representation in Washington D.C., particularly regarding future federal court appointments impacting firearms laws.
Rob Sexton, Legislative Affairs Director at BFA, signed off on the letter with appreciation for Governor DeWine's consideration and legacy on firearms-related legislation.
