Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate for the 2024 presidential election, is now in the national spotlight. She and her team aim to reshape her political persona to appeal to a broad section of the American electorate.
Harris has a long political record that is now under scrutiny as she attempts to present herself as competent and middle-of-the-road. One significant issue that has consistently defined her politics is her stance on the Second Amendment.
During her tenure as a state and local politician in California, Harris denied that the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to keep and bear arms unrelated to militia service. She insisted it had no bearing on state or local gun control laws. These positions were considered extreme even then; a 2008 Gallup poll showed only 20% of Americans agreed with Harris’ interpretation of the Second Amendment as applying solely to state militias, while 73% did not.
As a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, Harris mocked Joe Biden’s reluctance to use executive authority to ban so-called “assault weapons.” When asked for her opinion on the matter, Harris responded: “I would just say, hey, Joe, instead of saying no we can’t, let’s say yes we can.”
According to The New York Times, "video clips of [Kamala Harris’s] old statements and interviews are being weaponized as Republicans aim to define her as a left-wing radical who is out of step with swing voters."
The article also notes that "the Harris campaign will rebut most of Republicans’ attacks by arguing that they are exaggerating or lying about her record," according to a campaign official briefed on the plans.
There is debate over whether Harris should acknowledge past positions or attempt to rewrite history. Her current strategy appears focused on denying previous stances rather than admitting any change in perspective.
America's gun owners are urged not to forget where Harris has stood on their constitutional right to keep and bear arms. More information on this topic will be provided in future updates.
