Kamala Harris' past support for stringent gun control measures, including mandatory buybacks of modern sporting rifles and red flag gun seizures, has been well-documented. However, a recently surfaced video reveals a more controversial stance, suggesting that owning a gun could justify home inspections by authorities.
In the video, Harris states: "Just because you legally possess a gun in the sanctity of your locked home doesn't mean that we're not going to walk into that home and check to see if you're being responsible and safe in the way you conduct your affairs."
Laura Powell, a California attorney who investigated the origin of this quote, noted that Harris made this statement in May 2007 during a press conference about a proposed San Francisco ordinance requiring gun owners to lock up their firearms. At the time, Harris was serving as district attorney, and Gavin Newsom was mayor. The ordinance passed two months later but did not authorize home inspections.
Newsom clarified at the time: "We're not going to knock on everyone's door. We're not going to break in and inspect, if that's the question."
Despite this clarification, Harris reiterated her stance on camera: "So, this is about just basically saying that we are going to require responsible behavior by everyone in the community. Just because you legally possess a gun in the sanctity of your locked home doesn’t mean that we’re not going to walk into that home and check to see if you’re being responsible and safe in the way that you conduct your affairs."
Harris' statement raises questions about potential violations of the Fourth Amendment. According to Powell, "Harris did not correct herself, and no reporters asked about it. Neither Newsom nor any of the other speakers, which included an attorney with the city, commented on her statement."
