The report highlighted that regional blackouts during high-demand periods in 2023 exposed weaknesses in grid capacity and policy planning. The Ohio House GOP aims to use its communications platform "Message from the House" to address these challenges and advocate for more stable and diverse energy solutions.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that in 2023, Ohio generated 54.4% of its electricity from natural gas and 23.8% from coal, with renewables like wind and solar contributing less than 10%. This heavy reliance on fossil fuels has been challenged by market transitions and aging infrastructure, leading to reliability issues. The Ohio House GOP argues that maintaining a realistic energy mix that includes traditional sources is essential to avoid blackouts and support economic growth.

A report by PJM Interconnection, the regional transmission organization that includes Ohio, warned that rapid retirements of fossil fuel plants without equivalent capacity replacement could create reliability gaps. The report emphasized an urgent need for balanced capacity planning to prevent system failures under stress. Republicans reference PJM’s findings in their calls to preserve reliable baseload energy generation while expanding diversified capacity.
