Two identical bills have been introduced in the Ohio General Assembly, focusing on changes to state laws regarding firearm suppressors and mufflers in relation to the National Firearms Act of 1934.

At the federal level, H.R.1, referred to as President Donald Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill," aims to remove suppressors from NFA regulations entirely. The U.S. House of Representatives has narrowly passed this bill, but its future in the U.S. Senate is uncertain.

In Ohio, House Bill 331 and Senate Bill 214 propose changes to the Ohio Revised Code by eliminating suppressors and mufflers from being classified as dangerous ordnance and removing language that requires suppressor registration under the NFA.

Both bills are titled "Remove firearm mufflers, suppressors as dangerous ordnance" and aim to simplify state regulations.

House Bill 331 is sponsored by Representatives Kellie Deeter (R-Norwalk) and Tex Fischer (R-Boardman). Senate Bill 214 was introduced by Senator Kyle Koehler (R-Springfield).

Dean Rieck, executive director of Buckeye Firearms Association, expressed satisfaction with lawmakers' proactive stance for law-abiding gun owners in Ohio. "Many of our supporters have contacted us about state-level regulation of suppressors," Rieck stated. "And we're pleased to say we're getting ahead of this issue. We are working with sponsors of both bills to make sure that if the big, beautiful bill passes at the federal level, we'll be able to move forward with fixes to the Ohio Revised Code to make suppressors legal without taxes, registration, or additional red tape."

Senate Bill 214 was referred to the Senate Armed Services, Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee on June 4, with a first hearing scheduled for June 11.
