A project to enhance safety at an intersection in Athens County is scheduled to start on May 27. The Reduced Collision U-Turns (RCUTs) will be installed on U.S. 50 at Coolville, prohibiting left turns or straight crossings from County Road 56 onto U.S. 50. Instead, drivers will make a right turn and perform a legal U-turn at a nearby crossover.

Between 2019 and 2023, the intersection experienced 18 crashes, mostly involving left turns or straight crossings from County Road 56. RCUT intersections are designed to improve traffic flow and reduce conflict points by up to 50 percent, thereby decreasing collision opportunities and their severity. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recognizes RCUTs as an effective safety measure.

Lane closures on U.S. 50 will occur during Phase 1 of the project starting Tuesday, May 27. Traffic updates will be available on OHGO throughout the construction period, which is expected to conclude in October.
