The founding of the United States was rooted in the audacious idea that a group of Americans could govern themselves without a king. Central to this notion were self-evident truths, including the right to keep and bear arms. This right was considered equally important as other freedoms like speech and religion.

During the American Revolution, armed citizens played a crucial role in battles against British forces. Without their firearms, the concept of an independent United States might have remained just an idea. Recruits were expected to bring their own weapons, with early efforts specifically calling for them to furnish firearms and other necessary equipment.

The American Revolution Institute notes that soldiers initially relied on personal weapons from home, including those captured from enemies. The Continental Army primarily used smoothbore, flintlock muskets like the British Brown Bess or French Charleville.

Firearm production in early America was limited but began with small-scale manufacturers. Virginia's State Gun Factory repaired and produced muskets during the war. Notably, gunsmiths in Pennsylvania crafted rifles known as Kentucky, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania rifles.

General George Washington amassed various personal firearms during his lifetime. At his death, he owned several pistols, rifles, muskets, and fowling pieces. During the Revolution, he carried notable pistols gifted by figures like Gen. Edward Braddock and Marquis de Lafayette.

Large-scale firearm production emerged later when President Washington established national armories at Springfield and Harpers Ferry.

The right to bear arms has significantly shaped American independence and character. It allowed individuals to protect themselves and their families while defending freedom from tyranny.
