A former caregiver at a retirement community in Conneaut, Ohio, has been indicted on charges of rape involving elderly residents. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced the indictment of Wayde Shankle, 35, by an Ashtabula County grand jury. Shankle faces four counts of rape and one count of gross sexual imposition.

The allegations involve two residents at Villa at the Lake, where Shankle worked as a nurse aide. The case was investigated by Yost’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit with help from the Conneaut Police Department and the FBI. The Ashtabula County Prosecutor’s Office is handling the prosecution in Ashtabula County Common Pleas Court.

It is important to note that indictments are criminal allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

The Ohio Medicaid Fraud Control Unit is funded 75% by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through a grant totaling $15,343,488 for fiscal year 2025. The remaining 25%, amounting to $5,114,493 for FY 2025, is funded by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.
