The Buckeye Institute has reached a legal settlement in a case involving Beth Queen, a science teacher at Poland Seminary High School in Ohio. The case, known as Queen v. NEA, was filed after the Poland Education Association removed a stipend from the collective bargaining agreement that compensated biology teachers who taught college courses for Youngstown State University. Ms. Queen had taken on this additional work and was affected by the change.
Following the lawsuit filed by The Buckeye Institute on behalf of Ms. Queen, the Ohio Education Association agreed to settle the dispute to her satisfaction.
“With this settlement, the OEA properly recognized Ms. Queen’s claims and avoided costly and protracted litigation for all involved,” said Jay R. Carson, senior litigator at The Buckeye Institute and an attorney representing Ms. Queen.
Beth Queen has been teaching high school science for more than 30 years and has served as a union member and committee participant throughout her career until recent changes in union-negotiated pay led to her legal challenge.
Queen v. NEA was filed in Mahoning County Court of Common Pleas.
