A Clark County man has been sentenced to 18 years to life in prison for the murder of a 20-year-old in Springfield, Ohio. The announcement was made by Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost.
“Senseless violence ruins lives and shrouds communities in grief and fear,” Yost said. “There was no reason for the defendant to pull the trigger, and now he faces the consequences.”
Kedric Holt, 24, received his sentence after pleading guilty last week to one count of murder for the shooting death of Gregory Wells Jr. on July 8, 2023. Both men lived in Springfield.
The incident took place while Wells was sitting in the passenger seat of a Jeep Grand Cherokee parked outside Holt’s home on Rosewood Avenue. According to authorities, Holt, who was intoxicated at the time, approached the vehicle from the driver’s side and fired several shots into it. Wells was struck four times and died as a result.
Investigators recovered spent firearm casings at the scene and submitted them to forensic experts at BCI’s laboratory. The lab determined that these casings matched a Glock handgun that Holt had purchased only hours before carrying out the shooting.
The case was investigated by the Springfield Police Department and prosecuted by attorneys from Yost’s Special Prosecutions Section in Clark County Common Pleas Court.
