A parolee with a history of burglary convictions was shot and killed during a home invasion in Joliet, Illinois, on August 18. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Hadrian Drive, about 40 miles southwest of Chicago. Responding officers found evidence of forced entry and an unresponsive man upstairs who had suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
The Will County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Shelby Hurd, age 36, from Chicago. He was pronounced dead at 3:05 a.m. Saturday.
According to Joliet Police Sgt. Dwayne English, the female resident heard someone break in, retrieved a firearm, and hid in a closet with her infant child. When Hurd entered the bedroom, she fired one shot that struck him in the head.
“The suspect was wearing gloves and in possession of a screwdriver at the time of the incident,” Sgt. English said. “The suspect was not known to the victim.”
Neither the woman nor her child were injured during the encounter.
Court records indicate that Hurd had been convicted of multiple burglaries in Will and Cook counties. He was sentenced for burglaries committed in Tinley Park and Frankfort in 2024 and released on parole this February. His criminal record also included charges for identity theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, and weapons offenses.
Police stated that evidence points to Hurd entering the residence with intent to commit burglary; however, it is still unclear why he targeted this particular home.
Neighbors reported hearing gunshots and shared doorbell camera footage showing police arriving at the scene. The investigation by Joliet Police Department and Will County State’s Attorney’s Office is ongoing. As of now, no charges have been filed against the woman involved.
Her actions are being described as self-defense while protecting herself and her child from an intruder with a violent background.
