A recent training session titled "Protecting Houses of Worship" brought together church leaders, safety volunteers, and community members to focus on improving security in religious spaces. The event was sponsored by Buckeye Firearms Association and led by a team of experienced instructors.
The program featured both classroom instruction and scenario-based exercises. Participants learned practical skills designed to help them respond to potential threats while maintaining the welcoming atmosphere of their congregations.
Feedback from attendees highlighted the effectiveness of the instructors and the hands-on approach. One participant said, “The instructors were top-notch. The different types of sessions/scenarios and getting everybody to participate worked quite well. I learned a great deal. Look forward to doing it again.” Another added, “Very satisfied with the presentation and the way the team worked together. Very well organized. Great job.”
Some participants described how they planned to apply what they had learned immediately within their own faith communities. One couple commented, “Just wanted to say how impressed my wife and I are with Forrest and all the trainers, particularly Jeff and Deb. Working with our pastor on all the learnings to secure our small church. Many thanks, guys, and may God bless you all greatly.”
Several attendees noted that practicing real-life scenarios gave them new insights into areas where they could improve their preparedness: “The scenario training gave me a staggering realization of my short comings.’”
The class also included instruction using SIRT pistols—realistic replicas equipped with lasers that simulate live-fire situations without actual ammunition—to safely practice response tactics in realistic settings.
According to organizers, the program aims not only to enhance security but also build unity and resilience among faith groups through shared learning experiences.
Another session is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 1, in Mayfield Heights, Ohio.
