Greg R. Lawson, a research fellow at The Buckeye Institute, has commented on the recent passage of House Bill 186 and House Bill 335 by the Ohio House of Representatives. According to Lawson, “Taken together, House Bill 186 and House Bill 335 will help rein in unvoted property tax increases as The Buckeye Institute recommended. While there remains more to do to reform Ohio’s expensive system of local government and protect Ohioans from spiking property taxes, the adoption of the policies in House Bill 186 and House Bill 335 is another step in the right direction, and The Buckeye Institute stands ready to work with lawmakers in the Ohio Senate to make these policies law.”

The two bills are intended to address concerns about property tax increases that occur without direct voter approval. The Buckeye Institute has previously advocated for reforms aimed at making Ohio’s property tax system more transparent and accountable.

Lawson emphasized that while these legislative steps are positive, further efforts are needed to overhaul local government costs and prevent significant increases in property taxes for residents across Ohio.
