President Donald Trump signed an appropriations package into law on November 12, which includes a provision aimed at protecting the Second Amendment rights of veterans. The legislation prevents the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) from removing a veteran’s right to possess firearms solely because they have been assigned a fiduciary to manage their benefits.
The U.S. Senate approved the legislative proposal on November 10 as part of the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies bill. This measure maintains protections ensuring that veterans are not denied their constitutional rights without due process when a fiduciary is appointed.
Chairmen Mike Bost (R-Illinois) and Jerry Moran (R-Kansas), along with Senator John Kennedy (R-Louisiana), are working on additional legislation to make these protections permanent through codification.
