U.S. Attorney David M. Toepfer recognized Patrol Officer Ali Sabeiha of the Elyria Police Department on May 20 for his actions to save a mother and her children from an armed suspect.
The recognition came as part of the Freedom 250 Hometown Hero Award, which commemorates the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. The award honors individuals who embody liberty, service, and civic responsibility.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, on January 21, Officer Sabeiha responded to an armed robbery in Elyria. After a vehicle pursuit ended, the suspect fled on foot into a residential area where he encountered a mother with her four young children entering their home. The suspect forced his way inside and took the mother hostage at gunpoint.
Despite significant danger, Officer Sabeiha entered the residence without hesitation and confronted the armed suspect holding the woman at gunpoint. He was able to incapacitate the suspect using composure and tactical skill.
“We are grateful for Officer Sabeiha’s actions that day to save a mother and her children from a violent and dangerous criminal. His professionalism in the face of danger is a testament to his unwavering commitment to keep the public safe. It is our honor to recognize him as the Hometown Hero that he is, and for his exemplary service to his department and our community,” Toepfer said.
