Wheat futures started the week higher across key U.S. markets, following mixed results in Friday’s trading, according to an April 21 report. The wheat complex ended last week with winter wheat prices showing weakness while spring wheat saw gains.

The movement in wheat prices is significant for agricultural producers and market participants who rely on these benchmarks for pricing and planning. The latest Commitment of Traders data indicated that money managers increased their net short position in Chicago Board of Trade (CBT) wheat by 1,633 contracts, reaching a total of 7,266 contracts as of Tuesday. In Kansas City (KC) wheat futures and options, speculators added 1,316 contracts to their net long position for a total of 16,924 contracts.

Export sales data released Thursday showed that total commitments for old crop wheat reached 24.54 million metric tons (MMT), slightly above projections from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and ahead of the average pace at this point in the season. Shipments totaled 20.69 MMT—84% of USDA’s projection—which matches the average shipping pace.

Weather forecasts from NOAA predict limited precipitation over much of western Kansas through the Texas panhandle during the upcoming week; however, rain is still expected in parts of eastern Kansas as well as southern Illinois and Indiana.
