A parent who is concerned with the available literature at her daughter's Avon high school recently read parts of a book at an Avon Public School Board meeting that contained sexually explicit and pornographic material. The video was posted by Jennifer Cornaro on YouTube on Sept. 30.

The parent said, "As parents, we trust in the schools ... to look out for their best interest," according to the video. The parent continued, adding that the kids need permission from their parents for field trips, showing up late or leaving early or appointments. Avon public schools "don't need permission for their social workers or staff to ask students if they would like to use different names, preferred pronouns other than their biological sex or to allow access to pornographic material in the school library," she said.

The video shows the parent reading parts from a book that her daughter recently checked out from her school library. After reading a section from the book, the parent asked, "How is this literature deemed appropriate for minors?" She also claimed there are "many others" similar to the book in question. She questioned the school board: "I am not sure how the school must ask permission for a child to watch a movie, yet the school can decide to have porn available or affirm a gender change and parents don't need to know anything about it."

After reading part of the book, the parent said, "I would hope parents have the right to be informed on these topics... parents should decide if this is appropriate for their child, not the school and not the government." She added that many parents are "waking up to this madness" calling for the "sexualization of our children" to be removed from schools.

Parental rights within schools in Ohio have been discussed recently with a ballot referendum upcoming in November. According to local NBC News, Issue 1 regards abortion rights and parental notifications. Those in favor of Issue 1 said voting "yes" will uphold reproductive rights. Those against Issue 1 said this is a parental rights issue, as the referendum “ends parental notification and prevents parents from being involved in their child's medical decisions, like an abortion or irreversible sex-change operations” and “cuts parents out of the most important decisions in their children's lives while allowing abortion promoters to pressure those children behind closed doors."
