In honor of the late Supreme Court Associate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, Governor Mike DeWine has ordered the lowering of U.S. and Ohio flags to half-staff across public buildings. This respectful tribute aligns with the President's directive and will continue until sunset today, coinciding with the day of Justice O'Connor's interment.
As stated in her biography, Justice O'Connor was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Ronald Reagan and served from 1981 to 2006. A new exhibition traces her life journey, starting from her upbringing on a family ranch. It sheds light on her pre-Supreme Court years, highlights her significant achievements during her tenure on the Court, and underscores the enduring legacy she left both on and off the bench.
Her biography further notes that after retiring from the Supreme Court on January 31, 2006, O'Connor remained a dedicated advocate for judicial independence and the Rule of Law worldwide. In recognition of her lifetime achievements, President Barack Obama presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is considered as the nation's highest civilian honor, on August 12, 2009.
According to a report by WHIO7, both Biden and Chief Justice John Roberts delivered eulogies for O'Connor at Washington National Cathedral. She passed away on December 1 at the age of 93.
