Bernie Moreno, a U.S. Senate Candidate from Ohio, has accused Senate Democrats of shirking their Congressional duties by refusing to hold an impeachment trial for Secretary Mayorkas. He voiced this sentiment in an opinion piece published on April 19.

"Failing to hold a trial does a disservice to our nation in the name of partisanship from Democrats, and breaks the standards and traditions of the Senate,” Moreno said," said Moreno, Ohio Senate Candidate. "The case against Mr. Mayorkas is compelling and deserves to see its day in the Senate without biases. Alejandro Mayorkas refused to do his duty, and now Senate Democrats like Sherrod Brown are refusing to do theirs. Ohioans deserve better from their senator."

According to his op-ed published in The Blade, Moreno asserts that Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has overseen 10 million illegal border crossings, a record number in U.S. history. Moreno highlighted the negative consequences of what he termed an "unprecedented border invasion," including the continued influx of fentanyl into the U.S., leading to record overdoses, and the tragic death of University of Georgia student Laken Riley, who police say was killed by an illegal immigrant.

In his article, Moreno labeled Mayorkas' actions as a "complete dereliction of his duty," arguing that he is responsible for the crisis at the border. He further stated that the "reckless reversal" of past border policies by Congress members like Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown has aided Mayorkas, making Brown and others "complicit in this invasion."

Moreno also took issue with Brown's dismissal of the articles of impeachment delivered by the House of Representatives against Mayorkas earlier this month as a "distraction" and "political," according to his op-ed. Moreno described these impeachment articles as being about national security and ending what he sees as an invasion at our southern border. Given Brown's voting history, Moreno stated that such actions were not surprising.

Moreno cited in his op-ed that 78% of Americans perceive the border situation as a crisis, suggesting that they understand the gravity of the impeachment issue. He urged the Senate to fulfill its Constitutional duty and hold a trial. "With no trial held, it will be the first time in history that an impeachment charge is dismissed," said Moreno. He called such dismissal an unprecedented disgrace to what he considers the most deliberative legislative body, emphasizing that holding a full and fair trial is crucial for transparency with the American people and to ensure accountability.

According to his website, Bernie Moreno is a Colombian-American businessman. He is Ohio's Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, running against the Democratic incumbent Sen. Sherrod Brown.
