Integrity is a fundamental principle in public service, applicable to both those in uniform and elected officials. This value was called into question when Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the Democratic nominee for vice president, linked his military service to his stance on gun control.

Gov. Walz has advocated for measures such as banning the ownership of semi-automatic rifles like the AR-15-style rifle, which he equates with military weapons. "I spent 25 years in the Army, and I hunt. I’ve been voting for common sense legislation that protects the Second Amendment, but we can do background checks," Gov. Walz stated in a 2018 video clip. He added, "We can make sure those weapons of war, that I carried in war, are only carried in war."

However, scrutiny reveals discrepancies between Gov. Walz's claims and his actual service record. While he served during a time of war as part of the Minnesota National Guard, records indicate he did not participate directly in combat operations.

"I respect and honor Gov. Walz’s service to his nation and his state while serving in the Minnesota National Guard," said Mark Oliva from NSSF. "That calling carries with it a tremendous amount of responsibility. Chief among those burdens is integrity."

Further questions arose about Gov. Walz's military rank; he was administratively reduced from command sergeant major to master sergeant after not completing requisite training.

The controversy extends to technical differences between civilian-owned rifles and military firearms. The AR-15-style rifles available to civilians operate semi-automatically—one cartridge per trigger pull—unlike their military counterparts capable of automatic fire or three-round bursts.

The debate over these distinctions continues amidst broader discussions on gun control policies.
