Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) has introduced new legislation aimed at holding members of Congress financially accountable during government shutdowns. The bill, titled the Stop Holding Up Tax-Payers, Deny Wages on Washington’s Negligence (SHUTDOWN) Act, proposes imposing a daily tax on lawmakers whenever the federal government ceases operations due to funding lapses.
Moreno stated, “Democrats like Hakeem Jeffries want to get paid for shutting the government down. That’s ridiculous. If Congress can’t do the bare minimum, we don’t deserve a paycheck.”
The proposed measure comes amid ongoing debates over congressional responsibility during budget impasses that lead to government shutdowns.
