The Buckeye Firearms Association held its 2024 Youth Shoot over the weekend of September 14-15. The event was made possible by long-standing support for youth shooting programs.
Sponsored by the Buckeye Firearms Association, these Youth Shoots are two-day events that offer young people the chance to camp, shoot, and compete in a healthy atmosphere.
Tusco Rifle Club hosted this year's event on its 360-acre grounds in Dennison, Ohio. The event attracted 52 youth participants and 23 adult volunteers, many of whom camped on-site for the weekend.
Activities included archery, .22 rifle shooting, trap shooting for beginners, and an introduction to handguns for more experienced attendees. All new shooters participated in a firearm safety class led by experienced instructors before engaging in range activities.
Youth Shoot leader Steve Branam gave a presentation on America's heritage and the role firearms have played in history. Participants had opportunities to earn merit badges for organizations such as BSA, Venturing, HG, and 4H. One participant made history as the first to earn a Distinguished Expert award at a Youth Shoot event.
Dean Rieck, Executive Director of Buckeye Firearms Association said: "The BFA Youth Shoots are an investment in our young people and in our future. Supervised shooting sports teach firearm safety, healthy competition, and personal responsibility."
Those interested in future events can subscribe to the organization's free newsletter for announcements about upcoming shoots. Typically held twice a year—in spring and fall—the association hopes to expand with additional events across the state.
Dean Rieck is also known as a former competitive shooter, NRA Patron Member, former #1 NRA Recruiter, and host of the Keep and Bear Radio podcast.
