Presidential candidate Kamala Harris has been emphasizing her "pro-gun" stance as part of her strategy to appeal to swing state voters. The media has reported that Harris is a gun owner, and she recently told Oprah Winfrey in a televised appearance, “If anybody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot.” Harris is protected by U.S. Secret Service Agents.

Harris, however, has been working against the interests of law-abiding gun owners through her role at the White House’s Office of Gun Violence Prevention. Pro-gun members of Congress have advanced a measure to counteract one of the Biden-Harris administration’s initiatives.

The initiative in question aimed to ban a wide range of private firearm sales. It was enacted by the ATF via rulemaking to implement provisions of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, signed into law by Joe Biden in 2022. The NRA is challenging this rule in federal court.

Members of Congress have opposed the ATF’s rule. Last Thursday, the U.S. House Judiciary Committee advanced a Congressional Review Act joint resolution (H.J. Res. 144), introduced by Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA). The resolution would nullify ATF’s private sales rule and prevent similar rules from being enacted. Rep. Clyde stated:

“Ultimately, the goal of the Biden-Harris Administration’s universal background check rule is to create a nationwide firearms registry, which I’ve long warned will eventually lead to gun confiscation. It’s imperative that the House promptly passes my critical legislation to nullify the ATF’s rule in order to protect Americans’ Second Amendment liberties.”

Kamala Harris recently spoke about closing the "gun show loophole" at an event held by the National Association of Black Journalists in Philadelphia but did not mention her administration's efforts through ATF's rulemaking.

A questioner pointed out that handguns are involved in most firearm-related homicides in major cities and asked how Harris would address this violence with handguns in urban communities. Harris responded with talking points about the "gun show loophole" and said, “I myself protested at a gun show.” The interviewer noted that handguns involved in violence are mostly illegally obtained.

Harris resorted to general statements about taking “gun violence seriously” and formulating a “comprehensive” approach.

The interview suggested that Harris might not fully understand the scope of regulations promulgated by her administration.

As election approaches, guns play a significant role in Harris-Walz campaign strategy due to Harris's record on gun control and future objectives related to Americans' rights.
