On January 8, 2025, Governor Mike DeWine signed Senate Bill 58 into law. This legislation prohibits the requirement of firearm liability insurance or any fees associated with the possession of firearms, their components, ammunition, or knives.

Additionally, Senate Bill 148 was incorporated into SB 58. It prevents financial institutions from tracking firearms purchases and bars government entities from maintaining registries of firearms or their owners.

Senate Bill 58 was sponsored by Senators Terry Johnson and Theresa Gavarone. Senate Bill 148 was also sponsored by Senator Terry Johnson. Both bills aim to counter recent initiatives by gun control advocates that could increase costs and reduce privacy for lawful gun owners, focusing instead on criminal misuse of firearms.

The Buckeye Firearms Association supported both pieces of legislation and expressed gratitude to the governor for signing them into law. These laws will take effect in 90 days.
