Many Second Amendment advocates are celebrating recent legislative victories, but there is a continued call for vigilance against anti-gun measures. In Ohio, the Buckeye Firearms Association (BFA) has successfully promoted laws that prohibit firearms liability insurance requirements and fees on firearms and ammunition. They have also supported state laws providing civil immunity for self-defense acts while opposing several anti-gun bills.
Despite these achievements, efforts to restrict gun rights persist across the United States. The Democratic National Committee recently appointed David Hogg, a 24-year-old backed by Michael Bloomberg, as one of its vice chairs. Hogg has been vocal about his stance on gun violence, urging action beyond thoughts and prayers.
In South Carolina, the Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to discuss two bills that would expand prohibiting categories beyond federal law. Meanwhile, Colorado's State Senate is set to vote on a bill banning certain semi-automatic firearms. Utah's legislature is considering Senate Bill 130, which includes various gun control measures such as bans on semi-automatic firearms and standard capacity magazines.
Other states like Washington, Maine, Hawaii, and New Hampshire continue to introduce anti-Second Amendment bills regularly. Washington legislators have proposed House Bill 1504 requiring firearm insurance or liability bonds for possession.
Ohio has seen pro-gun legislation passed due to a supportive House and Senate majority and a governor who signs BFA-backed laws. However, with upcoming elections in 2026, there is concern about candidates who may oppose gun rights.
Linda Walker of NRA 2.0 shares her vision to return the organization to its members' control. Local politics remain crucial as city councils and school boards can influence gun rights policies significantly.
The BFA emphasizes its commitment to passing pro-gun legislation and educating the public through media relations and firearms classes. Unlike anti-gun groups funded by wealthy activists or corporations, BFA relies on citizen support for defending constitutional rights.
