The House Transportation Committee has unanimously approved House Bill 27, which proposes dedicating the Route 90 bridge over the Grand River in Perry Township to honor Army Specialist Jacob A. Ashton. This announcement was made by State Representatives Jamie Callender and Daniel P. Troy.
Specialist Ashton, a decorated combat veteran, served with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division until his death in August 2024. Born in Willoughby, Ohio, he later moved to Perry with his father and played sports for the Perry Pirates. He enlisted in the army in 2021 and deployed to Iraq in 2023.
His military accolades include the Army Commendation Medal with C Device, National Defense Service Medal, Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Combat Infantry Badge. Outside of his military service, Ashton was passionate about outdoor activities and bodybuilding.
Representative Callender expressed gratitude for the committee's support: “I want to thank my colleagues for their unanimous support of House Bill 27,” he said. “While nothing can bring Specialist Ashton back to his family, we can honor his memory and commitment to serving both our nation and his community.”
Representative Troy also praised Ashton's dedication: “Specialist Ashton served our nation admirably and was prepared to return to civilian life and continue that service as a first responder,” he stated. “Tragically, his life was cut short, but it is most fitting that we remember and salute his service through this bridge memorial.”
House Bill 27 will now proceed to a full House vote.
