The Buckeye Institute has released a policy brief titled "Advancing Healthcare Technology," advocating for the establishment of a "regulatory sandbox" to support AI innovation in healthcare. The proposed sandbox aims to create a flexible regulatory environment that reduces costs and bureaucratic hurdles, allowing developers to advance medical technologies safely.

Rea S. Hederman Jr., executive director of the Economic Research Center and vice president of policy at The Buckeye Institute, said, "An AI healthcare sandbox will build trust between regulators, developers, care providers, and the patients they serve, and move Ohio to the fore of the healthcare technology field." He emphasized that this approach could lead to more efficient innovations that improve patient health while giving medical professionals more time for patient interaction.

The policy brief suggests that an effective AI healthcare regulatory sandbox should be instructive by providing clear guidelines, voluntary for participants, secure in protecting patient information, impartial to ensure fairness, and coordinated with other states to promote broader adoption of AI-driven solutions.

The Buckeye Institute believes this initiative will allow collaboration among healthcare providers, AI developers, and policymakers to responsibly test new technologies related to drug development, medical imaging, disease diagnosis, gene therapy, medical research, and health data management.
