Greg R. Lawson, a research fellow at The Buckeye Institute, responded to the recent report from Governor DeWine’s Property Tax Reform Working Group. Lawson noted that some of the group's recommendations are in line with those previously suggested by The Buckeye Institute.
“Some of the recommendations from the Property Tax Reform Working Group are positive and align with recommendations made by The Buckeye Institute. However, as Ohioans clamor for relief from skyrocketing property taxes, more needs to be done. Ohio needs to revamp its complex and opaque local government system, as well as its thousands of separate taxing authorities. Until this happens, homeowners will continue to be stuck paying far more than they should for effective and efficient public services,” said Lawson.
Lawson emphasized that while certain steps have been taken toward addressing property tax issues in Ohio, significant changes are still needed. He called for an overhaul of the state's intricate local government structure and the numerous independent taxing bodies across Ohio. According to Lawson, without these broader reforms, homeowners will likely continue facing high costs for public services.
