Emily Marsh had three-extra base hits for Notre Dame College, including a game-tying solo home run in the seventh inning of game two. Katelyn DeWeese and Daniele Rivera each recorded three hits in game one. The Falcons totaled 17 runs in the doubleheader, but Frostburg State University had two walk-off wins, 13-12 and 6-5, on Tuesday.
In game one, the two teams combined for 25 runs. They combined for eight runs in the first inning, four in the fourth, seven in the fifth and five in the seventh. The game was tied four separate times.
In the first inning, DeWeese and Rivera singled and freshman Emma Gumont reached on a fielder's choice, and everyone was safe on an error. Marsh doubled to score two runs and two batters later, Lexi Rehm was credited with an RBI on a fielder's choice. With two out, sophomore McKenzie Anderson put a flyball into right field for a sacrifice fly and NDC led 4-0.
The first six hitters in the FSU lineup reached base before the Falcons could get an out in the bottom of the inning. Three consecutive RBI singles tied the contest at four. Notre Dame pitcher Allison Weilnau would strikeout three consecutive hitters to get out of the inning.
NDC put two runs on the board in the fourth, when Gumont hit her second two-run home run of the road trip.
A two-run single for the Bobcats in the bottom half of the fourth inning tied the game at six.
The Falcons offense went right back to work in the fifth inning. With bases loaded, Anderson grounded out to score one run. And with runners on second and third and two out, DeWeese hit an RBI single before Rivera doubled home two more runs. The Falcons led 10-6.
In the bottom of the fifth, Laura Gilford hit a three-run home run to pull Frostburg within one. Ryann Darling singled in the sixth to score the run that tied the contest at 10.
Notre Dame was cooking again in the top of the seventh with senior Mikaela Fording on second and Anderson on third. They both moved up a base on a wild pitch and the Falcons grabbed the 11-10 lead. With two out, Gumont singled to left field to score an insurance run.
Once again, Frostburg State found a way to respond. However, this time, they would take the lead and win the game. After the Bobcats tied the game at 12, they still had runners on first and second. Jamie Roberts singled up the middle and a run scored on a close play at the plate.
DeWeese and Rivera each had three hits and scored twice. DeWeese brought home her first RBI of her career. Gumont went 2-for-5 with three runs batted in. Anderson tied her career-high with two RBI.
Through two innings in game two, neither team scored and just three total hits were recorded.
In the third, FSU scored a run on an error. Notre Dame bounced back with a double by Marsh, a single by senior Alexi Maciejowski and an RBI single by Rehm.
Frostburg State broke the tie with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth. The Bobcats led 5-1.
Notre Dame pulled within one run in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs on four hits. Rivera and Gumont singled and a run would score on an error. With runners on first and third, sophomore Ellen Wheatland singled in a second run. Freshman Ella Collinsworth hit an RBI single with bases loaded.
Trailing by one run, and down to the final out in the top of the seventh, Marsh stepped up again with a line drive home run to center field to tie the game at five.
The first three Bobcats reached base in the bottom of the seventh, including the walk-off single that gave FSU the sweep.
Marsh had two hits and two RBI. Rehm also had two hits and went 2-for-3 at the plate. Weilnau started game two, as well, and went 3 2/3 innings in the circle, allowing two runs and only one earned run.
NDC will take on West Virginia State at home, on April 15. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
