Yuko Statement After Federal Court Stays Intervention in Redistricting Lawsuit

Yukoprr2

Today, Ohio Senate Minority Leader Kenny Yuko (D-Richmond Heights) issued the following statement after a federal court stayed its intervention in the state legislative redistricting process, allowing the Ohio Redistricting Commission to continue its map-drawing work. If the Commission does not adopt constitutional state legislative maps before May 28, the federal court said it will implement the third set of maps, adopted by the majority Commission members February 24 and ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of Ohio on March 17.

“Unfortunately, it appears that the federal court has undermined the constitutional reforms Ohioans overwhelmingly passed in 2015 to end gerrymandering. I hope the Commission will get back to work – and this time, get it right. It’s time to give voters the fair maps they’ve demanded, not settle for maps that have already been ruled unconstitutional.”

In its April 14 ruling, the Ohio Supreme Court ordered the Commission to draw a new, constitutional set of state legislative maps by May 6.
