State Representatives Thomas Hall and Dani Isaacsohn have introduced the 70 Under 70 Plan, a bipartisan bill aimed at protecting Ohio seniors from property tax increases. The plan seeks to implement a freeze on property taxes for certain owner-occupied homes. To qualify, individuals must be at least seventy years old, have an income not exceeding seventy thousand dollars, and have owned their homes for ten years or more. The goal of the plan is to address concerns about rising property values and help seniors stay in their communities as they age.
At a press conference held at the Statehouse, Representatives Hall and Isaacsohn discussed the details of the 70 Under 70 Plan. The proposed legislation is a response to the surging property values in various counties across Ohio. Increases of 41% in Ashland County, nearly 42% in Franklin County, and 31% in Summit County have raised concerns about potential property tax hikes. This plan aims to protect senior citizens and their homes from the burden of rising property taxes.
Both Ohio Speaker of the House, Jason Stephens, and House Minority Leader, Allison Russo, have expressed their commitment to addressing property tax laws during the upcoming fall legislative session. The introduction of the 70 Under 70 Plan demonstrates a bipartisan effort to support Ohio seniors in maintaining financial stability and remaining comfortably in their homes. With rising property values, freezing property taxes for eligible seniors is seen as a necessary step to protect their homes and generational wealth. Representative Isaacsohn believes that there is no better time than the present to implement this bill and provide much-needed support to Ohio's seniors.
