Gun ownership among Republican women in the United States has seen a significant increase, according to a recent Gallup poll. The data reveals that while overall gun ownership among U.S. adults remains around 30%, the rate among Republican women has risen from 19% during 2007-2012 to 33% in the period from 2019-2024.
The poll also highlights that gun ownership continues to be high among Republican men but is "relatively scarce" among Democratic and independent women. Furthermore, there has been a decline in gun ownership among Democratic and independent men.
Gallup's findings indicate that the gender gap in gun ownership has decreased over time, yet the political party gap has widened. Currently, 47% of Republicans own guns compared to just 19% of Democrats. This marks an increase from the previous sample between 2007-2012 when the difference was only 16 points, with 38% of Republicans and 22% of Democrats owning guns.
According to Gallup, traditional predictors such as race, marital status, and education have become less influential in determining gun ownership. Instead, factors like political party affiliation, ideology, and income have gained importance.
Conservatives are noted as one of the major subgroups with high rates of gun ownership at 45%, whereas liberals show a lower rate at 16%.
