Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio) addressed the Senate floor on Wednesday to discuss the impact of the recently passed budget law, which he said is designed to support Ohio workers and families.
Husted referred to the legislation as the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," stating, “I want to share with you and the people of Ohio about why I believe it’s a good bill and why I supported it. Because the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, as it’s known, was uniquely tailored to support Ohio workers and families.”
He emphasized that the law will result in higher take-home pay for residents. “The BBB results in more take-home pay for Ohioans, more money in their pockets. More take-home pay means independence. Government dependency means less independence. And that’s why this bill focuses on really allowing workers to keep more of the money they earn.”
According to Husted, tax cuts under this legislation are expected to leave an average Ohio household with approximately $7,000 more in annual income. He cited estimates from the Council of Economic Advisers: “The tax cuts were cemented for workers and job creators and will leave the average Ohio household with an estimated $7,000 more in take-home pay.
“More specifically, the Council of Economic Advisers estimates the bill will increase take-home pay for the average family with two kids in Ohio from between $6,900 a family to up to $11,700 per family.”
Husted also noted provisions such as eliminating taxes on tips and overtime: “And we made no tax on tips and no taxes on overtime a reality. Ohioans work hard. And that’s a change that they can feel legitimately in their pockets.” He recounted feedback from constituents: “I was on a telephone town hall last night. One of the ladies who called in said, ‘Hey, I want you to know my husband, he’s a line worker. He works a lot of overtime for the utility company—and that eliminating tax on overtime pay will mean a lot to our family.’
“It’s another aspect to the bill: It’s very important for working people.”
The child tax credit has been increased under this law as well: “We increased the child tax credit up to $2,200 per child. If we’d failed to do this, it would have dropped down to $1,000. It’s now up to $2,200 per child, and that benefit alone will serve 1.3 million Ohio families.”
Discussing business incentives within the state economy, Husted stated: “I’m going to brag about Ohio for a minute... because recently we were named the fifth-best state in the country to do business.
“And it’s gone a long way—from 39th-worst state to the fifth-best in nation... What did we do in the bill? A 20% small business tax deduction. It all adds up.
“And it’s estimated that The One Big Beautiful Bill alone is projected to create 1.2 million new U.S jobs a year over next decade.”
Husted highlighted manufacturing investments by noting changes allowing immediate expensing for new factories and equipment: “To that end we made sure that this legislation gave job creators freedom immediately expense investments...”
On workforce development measures included in law he added: “For decades of my life I have been working on issues surrounding workforce development... Well,in this bill,we allow Pell Grants be used workforce credentials land good jobs.”
Education-related benefits include school choice credits:“This creates school choice tax credit help create more scholarship opportunities parents children attend school their choice...”
Regarding adoption assistance,Husted pointed out:“Big Beautiful Bill supports Ohio families vulnerable children making adoption tax credit partially refundable up $5 000...
“As an adoptee—somebody who started my life foster home—it’s important me...we made just little bit easier them find family, support family.”
Addressing Medicaid concerns,Husted responded directly:“There are some whoppers lie being told about Medicaid right now... This bill supports strengthening Medicaid make sure those services there you—the people program originally designed serve...
“I want you know that Ohioans will have access more health care resources because Big Beautiful Bill than ever before.”
He added,“This package sending more Medicaid dollars more support rural hospitals Ohio than ever before.” The state government raised provider taxes allowed under new law, resulting ability draw down 60% additional federal Medicaid funding.Husted explained,“What does mean practically hospitals? For most hospitals receive 24% reimbursement previous year.As result taking more Medicaid money ever serve those populations.”
On fiscal responsibility,Husted stated,“We’re also safeguarding our future by making sure we are lowering our deficit.” He referenced Congressional Budget Office review saying,“When it was all said done, and Congressional Budget Office reviewed law,the final assessment actually reduces deficit by $366 billion.”
He concluded his remarks by emphasizing continued commitment toward fiscal responsibility while supporting constituents:“Ohio interests drove my work support this bill from start finish, and clear lead jobs, taxes, higher wages freedom prosperity for Ohioans.”
