Comedian and Yellow Springs resident Dave Chappelle seemingly threatened to pull the plug on investing in a comedy club and restaurant if a proposed affordable housing development is approved in the community.
"I am not bluffing, I will take it all off the table," Chappelle said at a village council meeting, the Dayton Daily News reported.
The village and the Oberer Homes had jointly developed a plan for single-family homes and duplexes and affordable housing on a 53-acre tract area along Spillan Road, the newspaper said.
After objections from Chapelle and other residents, the council effectively rejected a plan it helped formulate that would have allowed 64 single-family homes, 52 duplexes and 24 townhomes, the story said.
The council vote was 2-2, with one council member recusing himself, the story said. That put the zoning back to a plan that had been previously approved, that allows for 143 single-family homes starting at about $300,000, but nixed dozens of affordable housing units, the Daily News reported.
Other villagers had also expressed concerns over traffic flow and water management, the Daily News reporter.
Resident, Matthew Kirk originally favored the development but later changed his mind, arguing that the proposal was two projects, single-family homes and condo development, the Daily News reported.
“I think it’s important to kind of understand the framing and also understand how those products attract different home buyers,” Kirk said, according to the Daily News.
