This morning on Meet The Press, Senator Portman, co-chair of the Senate Ukraine Caucus, discussed the ongoing war in Ukraine. Portman said President Biden’s remarks about a “regime change” in Russia earlier this week were a mistake and played into the hands of Vladimir Putin and his propagandists. He also said we should be sending Ukraine all of the anti-air systems they need in order for them to establish a no fly zone in their country. He also discussed the potential use of chemical weaponry by Russia against Ukraine, and what the appropriate response would be by the United States and NATO. He called for a more concrete “red line” and clarity from the administration.
Portman also commented on his view of Supreme Court nominee Judge Jackson. He voiced his concerns about her judicial philosophy, in which he said he did not agree with her legislating from bench, which she has done in the past. He also was concerned with her refusal to take stance on court packing, which her mentor, Justice Breyer, has already come out against.
