Wildlife Resources Management Program Welcomes Dr. Valorie Titus

15

Valorie R. Titus, Ph.D., is the new Program Manager for the Wildlife Resources Management program at Hocking College.

Dr. Titus grew up just outside of Binghamton, NY, where she developed a deep appreciation for the outdoors and wildlife with a strong desire to help save the planet.

She has a Masters of Science in Biology from Murray State College and earned her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences with concentrations in Ecology, Evolution and Behavior from Binghamton University.

Dr. Titus has held many positions in state, federal and non-profit organizations. Since 2002, she has been a member of The Wildlife Society and currently is their President-Elect.

Dr. Titus taught field courses for the North East Section of The Wildlife Society. She was also a Curatorial Fellow in the Herpetology Department for two years at the Bronx Zoo and studied bison in Montana for the Wildlife Conservation Society.

She said, "The future of wildlife conservation doesn’t just lie in the hands of the current biologists, it also depends on those that will follow in our footsteps. My desire to teach wildlife biology began over 10 years ago when I started teaching as a volunteer instructor for the Northeast Section of The Wildlife Society Field Course at Camp Kehoe in Vermont."

Since she was a volunteer, she has taught at Green Mountain College and Keystone State College. She was also the Wildlife Biology Program Director at Keystone State College. She has also served on many committees and started student chapters of The Wildlife Society at the colleges where she taught.

As the program manager of Wildlife Resource Management at Hocking College, her goals are to advance the program by focusing on the needs of employers and working with a variety of organizations to ensure her program is preparing students for the field. Her current research focuses on how humans have influenced wildlife health.

For students to be successful in her program, Dr. Titus has said, "To be a successful wildlife manager, you have to put in the time to learn the skills necessary to feel comfortable in the field and make difficult decisions."
