Portman Applauds Announcement of Nearly $13 Million for Ohio Rail Projects

Portmann

Today, U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) applauded the announcement that the Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded grants to two rail projects in Ohio, totaling $12,935,968, through their fiscal year (FY) 2021 Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Grant Program.

“This is great news for Ohio rail systems and their efforts to upgrade infrastructure,” said Senator Portman. “This grant funding will help provide the resources needed to improve the safety, efficiency, and reliability of our railways.”

The first grant, awarded to the City of Cincinnati, Ohio, will support safety improvements to four crossings on CSX and Central Railroad of Indiana railroad in the City of Cincinnati. The second grant, awarded to Ohio Rail Development Commission, will go toward funding the construction of a new connecting track and extension of yard tracks in the Wheeling Lake Erie Railway Spencer Yard to eliminate switching movements and allow trains to directly access the yard from two railway subdivisions in Spencer, Ohio.

“We’re thrilled and grateful for this grant,” said Laura Bruner, President and CEO, The Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority. “It will improve safety and reliability of railroad crossings and vital infrastructure, connect people to jobs, increase supply chain efficiencies and drive sustainable economic growth.”

NOTE: In November, Senator Portman sent a letter to DOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg, asking DOT to consider the grant application submitted by the City of Cincinnati.
