Men’s Basketball Drops OAC Opener to Heidelberg

The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team went on the road to open up Ohio Athletic Conference play against Heidelberg University. They fell to the Student Princes by a final score of 99-83 inside Seiberling Gymnasium.

BW Leaders (2-3, 0-1 OAC)

  • Sophomore guard Ashton Price (Bay Village/Bay) led with 24 points, three assists, and seven rebounds. 
  • Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC guard Anthony Mazzeo (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) added 21 points and three assists.
  • Senior forward Jackson Simmons (Wadsworth) contributed 14 points, six board, two assists and two steals.
  • Freshman guard Landon Potopsky (Dover/Strasburg) scored a career-high 14 points.
Heidelberg Leaders (5-1, 1-0 OAC)

  • Tre Watkins led the Student Princes with 24 points and four assists.
  • Isaiah Young followed up with 17 points, two assists, and one block. 
First Half (BW 43-31)

  • Mazzeo and Price got the game started with back-to-back three-point shots, but Heidelberg grabbed the lead early with a 10-2 run.
  • Simmons and Mazzeo tied the game up at 20-20 with a layup from each, and a free throw from Priceflipped the lead in BW's favor.
  • Back and forth action ensued as the teams' traded baskets.
  • Seven straight points from Mazzeo strengthened BW's lead going into the half. 
  • Mazzeo led the half with 14 points, while Price led with five rebounds. 
Second Half (Heidelberg 99-83)

  • Heidelberg went on a 9-4 run to start the second half as they worked to catch up to the Yellow Jackets.  
  • Mazzeo then went on a 7-1 run to strengthen BW's lead again. 
  • Heidelberg continued to keep BW close, getting the score to 59-53 with 13:03 left. 
  • With 8:32 left in the game, Heidelberg cut the Yellow Jackets back to 70-65, then went on a 12-1 run to claim the lead.
  • A 12-3 run from Heidelberg pushed them ahead and gaves them momentum until the end of the game. 
  • Price led BW scorers with 11 second half points
  • Potopsky added 10 second half points.
  • Watkins was the high scorer in the half as he scored 22 points on 8-10 shooting.
