Gaese, Muther haul in more academic honors

Adding to an already lengthy list of accomplishments, Kenyon College seniors Sebastian Gaese and Luke Muther were recently named the the United Soccer Coaches 2022 Division III Men's Scholar All-America Team.

The Scholar All-America Team consisted of 42 student-athletes from around the nation. The honorees were split into three teams. Muther, who earned the award for the second time in his career, was named to the Second Team, while Gaese was voted on to the Third Team.

During their time at Kenyon, Muther and Gaese helped the soccer program post a combined 72-8-7 record. They played in the NCAA Tournament four times, and won four regular-season North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) titles and two NCAC Tournament titles.

Muther, a defender, missed the first few games of the season, but returned to guide a Kenyon defense that allowed just 12 goals all season. The defensive unit posted 13 shutouts and its 0.545 goals against average ranked 11th among all NCAA Division III teams. When joining the attack, Muther chalked up two assists this season, giving him nine for his career. In the classroom, he majors in physics.

Gaese, a forward, led the team, as well as all players in the NCAC with 10 assists this past season. His assist total was complemented by 10 goals, giving him 30 points for the 2022 campaign and bringing his Kenyon career totals to 31 goals, 18 assists and 80 points. In the classroom, Gaese majors in neuroscience.

The two were an integral part of the 2022 Owls team that went 19-2-1, won the NCAC for a seventh straight time, earned a national rank as high as No. 3 and made it to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Student-athletes named to the Scholar All-America Teams will be formally acknowledged for their accomplishments on the field and in the classroom at the United Soccer Coaches All-America Ceremony and Reception on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, in conjunction with the United Soccer Coaches Convention.
