The No. 8 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team faced Marietta College in an Ohio Athletic Conference showdown in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center. The Yellow Jackets fell to the Pioneers by a 59-49 final score.

BW (17-2, 10-2 OAC) was led by sophomore guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial) as she totaled a game-high 12 points and two steals. Junior guard/forward Sylvie Sonneman (Jamestown/Greenview) and sophomore forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) each posted seven points.

Marietta (13-6, 8-4 OAC) was led by senior All-OAC guard Devin Hefner as she totaled 11 points and added four assists and three rebounds. Junior forward Hannah Kroft finished with 10 points and three boards.

First Half

  • Two triples by Irwin put the Yellow Jackets up 9-3 to start the first.
  • The Yellow Jackets led MC 15-9 after ten minutes of play.
  • The Pioneers held the Yellow Jackets scoreless for the first 3:39 of the second quarter, closing the gap to just two points.
  • BW went into the half leading 23-17, forcing five Marietta first-quarter turnovers.
Second Half

  • The third quarter featured a lot of back-and-forth play before a three-pointer by the Pioneers put them up two (30-28), forcing a Yellow Jacket timeout with 5:39 left in the quarter.
  • Marietta held BW without a field goal for over four minutes and finished the third quarter on a 15-7 run, leading 42-35 going into the fourth.
  • The Pioneers earned a 11-point advantage with a layup by Kroft with 8:05 left to play in the game.
  • The Yellow Jackets trailed by 10 before a three by senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Megan Hensel (Upper Sandusky) with 2:13 left put the game within seven points (54-47 MC).
  • A last second made three-pointer from deep as the shot clock was winding down by Marietta with :55 left clinched the win for the Pioneers. BW dropped just its second game of the year by a 59-49 final score.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, February 1 as they host the University of Mount Union for an OAC contest and the annual Play4Kay Game. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
